I know, I know...it's been a while again!! Not that I haven't thought about updating, just hasn't been a priority. And now I was waiting for blood test results from yesterday so you would have the absolute latest:) So here goes...
Last time I did a blog entry I shared how Dexter was starting to loose his hair. The morning after that entry he had a melt down. He was scheduled to go to Neepawa for a volleyball tournament and he just didn't want to go. Henry originally gave him the option to go to Brandon with me for the day, but I said "no". At some point he has to face his fears. So Henry took him to town to meet up with his team, and explain to the coach what was happening. Dexter was allowed to keep on his toque and after 2 difficult days for him, he continued on with life as he knew it. Most of his hair did fall out, and we shaved what was left. He is very fortunate to be able to wear his toque in school and for sports...even though it must be quite uncomfortable when you get all sweaty and hot playing sports! The hair is starting to resurface, and if it will continue to thicken...the toques will have to be retired again. It would be possible to do it already, but Dexter thinks it's still too thin.
Otherwise Dexter has been doing very well. Now in January he completed 6 months of taking his medication at 50% of the dose. At his last appointment in mid January, one of his medications was increased to 75%. His neutrophil counts had been very stable for a couple of months and the Dr wanted the counts to come back down in the 0.75 to 1.0 range (he was at 2.2). He did a blood test yesterday to check to see how the increase had affected him and thankfully he has stayed in the neutropenic free zone...his neutrophil count was 1.3 yesterday. We will find out at his February appointment whether or not one of his other medication will be increased to 75% as well.
Dexter has been feeling really good. He has fought a sinus cold twice, with the last one being quite bad. Our family has been very fortunate to not have had any sickness in the home! PTL!! He plays rec hockey, and with his determination has greatly increased his stamina. He has even scored a goal and received an assist. Quite an accomplishment if you consider where he was just 9 months ago. Dexter is also playing basketball. He keeps up well with his peers and knows how to get the ball into the basket! We truly admire his determination to not let his sickness keep him down.
Thank you for all of your continued concern and support. We are grateful beyond words that we are able to share such a positive report about how Dexter is doing. We know without a doubt that the many prayers for his health are being answered. Continue to pray that Dexter will allow himself to be used by God, and that he would be willing to share his story someday. Sometimes he would rather pretend it never happened, but we know he is walking this journey for a purpose.
Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
